First Baptist Church Spire Walkabout

Here's a tour of the top of the First Baptist Church Spire in downtown Denver with Brian Henderson and April Alsup. Our church spire was erected in 1937, before modern cranes and equipment were available, and the rooster on the top is a symbol for hope and forgiveness for all Christians.

The Soul Box Project at FBCD

Ever had an epiphany? Well that's what happened to Rhonda Magee and Larry Jenks. After spending several years in the Pacific Northwest they decided to head back to their Denver roots. When they arrived they heard their Portland friends would be spearheading a campaign focused on the U.S. gunfire epidemic and that's when it happened, the "ah-ha"! They realized that the Soul Box Project could bring relief to people in Colorado too. Here's April Alsup's interview on Rethink Baptist TV.

What's on top of the FBCD Spire?

Here's a picture of the weather vane atop our steeple. You'll notice a rooster at the pinnacle and perhaps you are wondering why. Historically, many Protestant churches in Europe placed a rooster atop their steeples to distinguish them from Catholic Churches, but the rooster has been a Christian symbol since God used it to show the weakness of man with Peter and the triumph of Christ in the resurrection.

An Evening with JD Souther

On Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 8:00 PM Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee JD Souther comes to First Baptist for an evening of mid-century music. “Raised on a steady diet of big band and jazz during his childhood, Souther has routinely returned to that music—as well as the genius songwriters of the early 20th century (Gershwin, Cole Porter)—for inspiration.
On his latest studio album, Tenderness, Souther combines these musical threads, striking a perfect balance between understated jazz and the ineffable pop narratives that have been the backbone of much of his greatest work.”JD’s latest releases include Tenderness (Sony Music Masterworks), described by Uncut Magazine as an album that connects “LA’s ‘70s golden age with the Great American Songbook,” with songs that “sound like standards themselves.”

First Baptist Church of Denver Inspires

At that time he was an American Baptist minister and activist who eventually became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement. Born in Atlanta, King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, tactics his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi helped inspire.

LtQ (Living the Questions) Faith Study Group

For the next few months, our weekly bible study group has moved to Monday nights and we'll be using the “Living the Questions” curriculum, a progressive study exploring questions of faith. It's designed to help people wrestle with the relevance of Christianity in the 21st century. LtQ does not offer a "systematic theology", but is more of a thematic overview born of day-to-day conversation and questions raised in local parishes. Utilizing both written material (downloadable from the web) and DVD-based input from "some of the most outspoken and respected voices in today's theological circles".
