An Evening with JD Souther

On Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 8:00 PM Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee JD Souther comes to First Baptist for an evening of mid-century music. “Raised on a steady diet of big band and jazz during his childhood, Souther has routinely returned to that music—as well as the genius songwriters of the early 20th century (Gershwin, Cole Porter)—for inspiration.
On his latest studio album, Tenderness, Souther combines these musical threads, striking a perfect balance between understated jazz and the ineffable pop narratives that have been the backbone of much of his greatest work.”JD’s latest releases include Tenderness (Sony Music Masterworks), described by Uncut Magazine as an album that connects “LA’s ‘70s golden age with the Great American Songbook,” with songs that “sound like standards themselves.”

First Baptist Church of Denver Inspires

Martin Luther King Jr. preached at First Baptist Church of Denver on April 16th, 1962. At that time he was an American Baptist minister and activist who eventually became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement. Born in Atlanta, King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, tactics his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi helped inspire.

LtQ (Living the Questions) Faith Study Group

For the next few months, our bible study group has moved to Monday nights and we'll be using the “Living the Questions” curriculum, a progressive study exploring questions of faith. It's designed to help people wrestle with the relevance of Christianity in the 21st century. LtQ does not offer a "systematic theology", but is more of a thematic overview born of day-to-day conversation and questions raised in local parishes. Utilizing both written material (downloadable from the web) and DVD-based input from "some of the most outspoken and respected voices in today's theological circles".
